Subwavelength imaging of light by arrays of metal-coated semiconductor nanoparticles: a theoretical study
نویسنده
چکیده
Rigourous calculations of the imaging properties of metamaterials consisting of metal-coated semiconductor nanoparticles are presented. In particular, it is shown that under proper choice of geometric and materials parameters, arrays of such particles exhibit negative refractive index within the region of the excitonic resonance of the semiconductor. The occurrence of negative refractive index is predicted by the extended Maxwell-Garnett theory and confirmed by a layer-multiple scattering method for electromagnetic waves. By using the same method it is shown that within the negative refractive-index band, arrays of such nanoparticles amplify the transmitted near-field emitted while simultaneously narrow down its spatial profile leading to subwavelength resolution. The effect of material losses to the imaging properties of the arrays is also addressed. PACS numbers: 42.70.Qs, 42.25.Bs, 78.67.Pt, 78.67.Bf, 73.20.Mf Submitted to: J. Phys.: Condens. Plasmonic Nanoparticles for Optofluidic Applications
This thesis discusses the application of colloidal particles to optofluidic systems. Colloidal particles can be added as a “dopant” to the liquids in these devices to provide functionality that cannot be obtained with homogenous fluids. We examine electrooptic effects in liquid suspensions asymmetric metallic nanoparticles. The theoretical optical properties of gold nanorods and noble metal nan...
متن کاملResonant terahertz transmission in plasmonic arrays of subwavelength holes
A review of transmission properties of two-dimensional plasmonic structures in the terahertz regime is presented. Resonant terahertz transmission was demonstrated in arrays of subwavelength holes patterned on both metals and semiconductors. The effects of hole shape, hole dimensions, dielectric function of metals, array film thickness, and a dielectric overlayer were investigated by the state-o...

The study of metal nanoparticles plays a central role in the emerging novel technologies employing optics beyond the diffraction limit. Combining strong surface plasmon resonances, high intrinsic nonlinearities and deeply subwavelength scales, arrays of metal nanoparticles offer a unique playground to develop novel concepts for light manipulation at the nanoscale. Here we suggest a novel princi...
متن کاملSubwavelength plasmonic kinks in arrays of metallic nanoparticles.
We analyze nonlinear effects in optically driven arrays of nonlinear metallic nanoparticles. We demonstrate that such plasmonic systems are characterized by a bistable response, and they can support the propagation of dissipative switching waves (or plasmonic kinks) connecting the states with different polarization. We study numerically the properties of such plasmonic kinks which are character...

We demonstrate a new nanoscale spectroscopic technique that combines subwavelength near-field imaging with broadband interference spectroscopy. We apply this technique to study phase spectra of surface plasmons in individual gold nanoparticles and nanoparticle dimers. Collective plasmon oscillations in selected nanostructures are excited by a femtosecond white-light continuum transmitted throug...
